Supporting the Elderly - Helping Seniors by Becoming a Senior Companion

Jan 21st, 2012 Charles Tetsal

With the growth in the senior population, the need for senior companions has also risen. There are many seniors that simply can't drive around or even get to socialize because they just are no longer able to do so without some sort of assistance. So the need for a senior companion can become an option for some seniors.

Getting old is not easy and if a person who is elderly is forced to be stuck at home all the time they will not be able to continue to enjoy life. Being able to socialize and get out helps their minds to stay young for a far longer time than if they weren't able to. If you would like to help out it this type of situation not only will it be a wonderful thing to do for a senior, but you might find it quite fun as well.

You can get started doing something like this by getting a hold of your county office or even a senior citizen center and ask them if they have any programs available that might need your help as a companion for one of their many seniors. Once you have found places that might need your help, it's a good idea if you figure out what it is you would like to do or be willing to do as a senior companion. After all, it's going to work out better if you enjoy doing it as well.

Most agencies that deal with seniors will have a set of guidelines that they are going to want you to follow so it's important that you read up on their rules and their guidelines and make sure that you are flexible enough to follow them. Should you have any questions it's probably a very good idea that you ask whomever is in charge if you can sit down and talk more about the rules and make sure that it's going to work for all of you.

It's a good idea that you sit down and make up a list of interests that you have as well as interests you think that seniors might have and see how many of them match up. The ones that match up should be the ones you try to focus on. You might like to play cards and the seniors might like doing that.

If you are into crafts maybe you can find some seniors that would love to learn a new craft that they can enjoy doing with you. If your thing is to go out on drives just to see some nature feel free to include seniors in that kind of a plan. Taking seniors out on picnics is probably something that will be enjoyable for all of you so consider doing something like that as well.

You might also want to think about offering help by taking them to do their shopping, banking, paying their bills, visiting the doctors and then offering to take them out to lunch after so that they can end their day with a nice relaxing and delicious plate of food.

Whatever you do and whomever you befriend as a senior companion it is always important that you are allowed to have all of the needed info on any health issues that they may have and a list of those you should contact in case there is some sort of emergency. Never take them anywhere without that kind of information.
